How to Confidently Speak Up in Groups and in Meetings
View Post
Do you wonder how to speak up in group settings? When you're in a meeting and want to speak up, how do you enter the conversation? In this lesson, learn phrases that allow you to speak up in meetings so that you can speak confidently and share your ideas. These are great leadership skills for managers and leaders.

One of the main challenges with group conversations and meetings is not being able to share your thoughts, insights, opinions because it can be hard to enter the conversation.

You might have the most important piece of knowledge to share or life-changing wisdom to impart, but unless you speak up no one will ever hear it.

In this lesson, I share strategies for speaking up in group settings. This will be especially helpful when you're in group conversations and meetings.

Let's go!

Here are some phrases you can use to enter the conversation and speak up so that people will listen:

  • I have something to say
  • I'd (I would) like to add something
  • Speaking of (topic X)
  • On the topic of
  • While we're on the topic of
  • Mind if I say something?
  • I'd like to add my two cents
  • I'd like to share my two cents
  • Those are my two cents
  • Do you want to know my two cents?
  • What I'd say is
  • What I'd say on this subject/topic is

Don't be afraid of pauses or silences. Those are great moments to jump into a conversation and speak up.

If someone is about to end their sentence and wrap up their thoughts, they'll use falling intonation. That's when the tone of voice lowers (as opposed to rising intonation with a question or leveled intonation when the sentence is continuing).

The next time you're in a meeting or group conversation pay attention to these opportunities to speak up and use some of the phrases from this lesson.

You have value to add to the conversation. But unless you speak up and jump in, no one will know how amazing your insights are!

See you in the next lesson!

Keep up the good work :))
