Alternatives to “You’re welcome”

Hey Advanced English Learners! Mary Daphne here, this is where we come together to boost your fluency, confidence, and clarity in English.

When we do someone a favor or something nice for someone, one response in you are welcome, or you’re welcome.

But that’s not the only way to respond politely. So today, we’re looking at alternative ways to reply to “Thank you.”

🌟🌟🌟

Don’t even mention it.

Thanks for the green tea latte!

Oh, don’t even mention it! I’m glad we got to meet up, finally!

My pleasure.

Thank you so much for giving me a lift.

My pleasure. Your house is on my way anyway, we’re practically neighbors!

Sure, thing.

Thank you so much for picking up my dry cleaning.

Sure, thing. I was able to drop off my dress, so I had to go regardless!

Oh, it was nothing!

So cool of you to bring me lunch! I did realize how famished I was until you showed up with that pizza!

Oh, it was nothing! It gave me an excuse to pop into the new pizzeria! I’ve been meaning to try it ever since they opened a month ago!

You’re most welcome.

It was really kind of you to check in on me yesterday. I was having an off day so it really was awesome of you to call.

You’re most welcome. I know you’d have done the same for me.

Happy to help. / Glad to help.

Thanks for lending me your sweater, I would have frozen otherwise!

The pleasure’s mine.

Thanks for helping with the spreadsheet! I don’t think we would’ve finished crunching the numbers in time if it weren't for your help!

The pleasure’s mine. You know me, I love spreadsheets!

I’m glad to be of assistance.

Thanks for the public speaking tips! They really helped calm my nerves before my presentation this morning.

I’m glad to be of assistance. You were already in a good spot, I was just moral support!

No worries at all.

Thanks for holding the elevator.

No worries at all.

Don’t worry about it.

Thanks for spotting me, I can’t believe I forgot my wallet at home. Venmo me the amount I owe for lunch.

Don’t worry about it.

Anytime!

Thanks for the amazing dinner!

Anytime! We’ll do it again. I make a mean chicken parmesan I think you’ll like.

You’d have done the same for me.

Thanks for coming to get me at the airport.

You’d have done the same for me. Besides, what’re friends for anyway?

*You can also say: If you were in my shoes you’d have done the same for me.

Now, what about after you send a gift and the person says thank you. Sure, you could reply with “you’re welcome” but there are other ways that sound more personal.

When I saw it, it made me think of you!

Thank you for these gorgeous earrings!

When I saw it, it made me think of you! This style goes well with your haircut.

You deserve it!

Thank you for these gym clothes!

You deserve it! You’ve been training so hard, I wanted you to have some new gear to celebrate your accomplishments.

It’s a small token of appreciation.

Thanks so much for the beautiful flowers! How’d you know Dahlias are my favorite?

It’s a small token of appreciation for all you do around here to keep this department afloat. And I remember you telling me that you had them at your wedding!

🌟🌟🌟

So there you have it, alternatives to you’re welcome when someone thanks you for something you did or said. Not every reply has to be “you’re welcome.” It’s fun to vary it and mix things up.
