Do you want to sound more native in English? If so, then you need to learn how to use the word "or" to index uncertainty. I will teach you how to use "or" to make your English sound more natural and fluent. I will also provide you with examples of how to use "or" in different contexts. Time to level up your English!

Hi, everyone. Did you know that mastering the English language can drastically improve your career prospects, boost your social skills, and generally make life a whole lot more interesting. Yeah, that's right. But here's the real kicker. It's not just about memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules and syntax.

It's about understanding the subtle nuances that make the English language vibrant and dynamic.

Today in this lesson, we're going to dive into a fascinating 2015 study by Veronica Drake called Indexing Uncertainty: the Case of Turn Final Or. This study can unlock some intriguing strategies to make you sound more like an L1 native English speaker and really ramp up your English fluency.

Now you might be wondering, what on earth does "indexing uncertainty" mean? Simply put, it's a way of expressing uncertainty or inviting the listener to contribute to the conversation. And in English, we often do this by ending our statements or questions with the word, or.

Let's dig a little deeper into this. First, why don't we start with an example from the workplace. Picture this, you're in a team meeting and you're proposing a new project idea. Instead of declaring, "we should launch this project," you might say, "maybe we could launch this project or..."

What you've just done is you've opened up the discussion, inviting others to give their input. This small tweak can make a world of difference in how you're perceived and in fostering open and collaborative conversations.

Now let's try a social setting. Instead of asking someone, "do you wanna go to the movies?" Try, "do you wanna go to the movies or?" This again, opens up the conversation, making the other person feel more involved and less pressured to accept the initial suggestion.

These are just a couple of examples of how to use or to index uncertainty. It's a powerful tool that can help you achieve fluency in English. But remember like any tool, the key is practice.
